Step 1 - Decide which computer to use for the database.
You can use your local PC or some other computer on the LAN.
If the computer you decide to use already has a Default Instance of SQL Server 2005 or 2008 installed and running, it is not necessary to install another instance.
Step 2 - Download and install cimManager
At the computer you've decided to use to hold the CompassIM Database, logon to Windows as a member of the local Administrators group.

You can run the installation package, cimManager.msi, during the download or save it to disk and run it later. If you save it to disk, double click it to run Windows Installer.
Complete Step 3 before executing cimManager.
Step 3 - Download and install SQL Server 2005
Detailed instructions for SQL Server installation are found in CompassIM Help, which is now available from Start - All Programs - CompassIM.
To download Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, go to the Microsoft download site: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select the download for the file, SQLEXPR.EXE. Please refer to the instructions in CompassIM Help (see Step 3 above) before running the installation. The instructions explain how to name the instance "CompassIM", and this is a MANDATORY part of the installation.
You can use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 if your PC is running Windows XP. If your PC is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, you must use SQL Server 2008. To download the free Express Edition, go to the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition download site and download the SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe file. During installation, you are given the opportunity to name the instance. Just as with SQL Server 2005, you must name the instance "CompassIM".
Note: You can call Access Data Systems for help with installing SQL Server. It might save you some time.
Step 4 - Create the CompassIM Database
Create the CompassIM database by running cimManager on the database computer. Instructions are found in CompassIM Help.
Step 5 - Begin CompassIM operations
CompassIM Help explains how to set up your data. Work through Setup and Administration and refer to the Users Guide as needed.
If you decide to install the Optional Components, BarTender for label printing or cimRF for RF operations, go to Download Optional Components, BarTender and cimRF.
